To solar cells more efficient and less costly
Solar energy is expensive. Therefore, despite a huge potential, it is little used. One of the most promising solar cell has been designed in the early 90s by Professor Michael Graetzel of Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. Inspired by the principle of photosynthesis, this cell is theoretically very interesting. Unfortunately, two problems related to materials used retard its development. With two technologies developed by the team of Professor Benoit Marsan from NanoQAM, these problems have been resolved. The scientific and commercial future of solar cells could be completely transformed and it is this contribution that the Québec Science committee has decided to recognize into its energy/chemistry category.
